How We Evaluate eSIM Plans

Transparency matters. Here's exactly how AvailSim collects data, compares plans, and makes recommendations — including what we know, what we don't, and how we're improving.

How We Collect Plan Data

We aggregate eSIM plan details from provider websites, app listings, and published pricing pages. Each plan is normalized into a consistent format: price in USD, data amount in GB, validity in days, and network type (4G/5G).

Plan data is reviewed and updated regularly. When we last verified pricing, we show a “Prices verified” date on each country comparison page so you know how fresh the data is.

We currently track 8 providers across 30+ countries. We plan to expand coverage as the site grows.

What We Compare

For every plan, we display:

  • Price— in USD, as listed by the provider
  • Data amount— in GB, or “Unlimited” where offered (with notes on fair usage policies where known)
  • Validity— how many days the plan lasts after activation
  • Network type— 4G or 5G, based on provider claims
  • Price per GB— calculated to help you compare value across different plan sizes
  • Provider— which company sells the plan, with a link to their full review

How “My Pick” Is Selected

On each country comparison page, one plan is highlighted as “My Pick.” This is selected based on the best combination of:

  1. Value— price per GB relative to other plans for that country
  2. Data amount— enough data for a typical trip (we favor plans with 10GB+ for most destinations)
  3. Provider reliability— based on app store ratings, user reviews, and reported issues
  4. Validity— plans with 30-day validity are preferred over shorter durations for flexibility

Affiliate commission rates do not influence which plan is selected. We highlight the plan we'd genuinely recommend to a friend — even when a different provider offers a higher commission.

Our Testing Approach

We believe in being honest about what we've actually tested. Country comparison pages use a tiered system:

verified

Personally Tested

Countries where I've traveled with eSIMs and run speed tests. Includes real performance data, activation screenshots, and firsthand notes.

group

Community Verified

Countries with user-submitted reviews and speed test data from real travelers. Growing over time as more people share their experiences.

description

Based on Published Data

Most countries currently fall here. Comparisons are based on provider-published plan details, pricing, and publicly available user feedback. Honest and useful — but not firsthand.

I have international trips planned throughout 2026 (France, Nicaragua, Ireland, England, Egypt, Jordan, Taiwan) and will test multiple eSIM providers on each trip. As those results come in, country pages will be upgraded from “Based on Published Data” to “Personally Tested” with real speed data and photos.

Provider Ratings

Each provider page displays an “AvailSim Rating” out of 5.0. This is our editorial assessment based on:

  • Plan variety and pricing competitiveness
  • Country coverage breadth
  • App store ratings (cited with source and date)
  • User feedback from reviews and community reports
  • Activation experience and ease of use
  • Customer support responsiveness

These ratings reflect our current assessment and will evolve as we gather more firsthand testing data and user reviews. They are not based on aggregated user scores (we'll add that once we have enough reviews).

Affiliate Transparency

AvailSim earns revenue through affiliate commissions. When you click through to a provider and purchase an eSIM, we may receive a commission at no extra cost to you.

Here's what that means for our recommendations:

  • We compare every provider, including those without affiliate programs
  • Commission rates do not influence rankings or “My Pick” selections
  • We never hide cheaper plans to push higher-commission options
  • All affiliate links are marked with rel="sponsored" per Google's guidelines

If you believe a recommendation seems biased, please let us know. We take this seriously.

What We Don't Know (Yet)

We believe honesty about limitations builds more trust than overpromising. Here's what we can't currently tell you:

  • Real-time speeds— We don't monitor network performance continuously. Speed varies by location, time of day, and network congestion.
  • Coverage quality in rural areas— Provider-published coverage maps don't always reflect reality off the beaten path.
  • Customer support quality— Our assessment is based on published response times and user reports, not systematic testing of every support channel.
  • Fair usage enforcement— “Unlimited” plans often have unpublished throttling thresholds that we can't verify without extended real-world testing.

As we test more providers on our travels and collect more user reviews, these gaps will shrink. In the meantime, we'll always be clear about what we know versus what we're reporting from provider data.

Corrections & Updates

eSIM plans change frequently — providers update pricing, add countries, and modify terms. If you spot outdated pricing, incorrect plan details, or a provider we should add:
